Halle Berry made a bold fashion statement at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival by finally wearing the stunning maroon gown she was previously banned from showcasing due to new dress code rules.
The 58-year-old actress appeared at the Chopard Universe Gala in a dramatic strapless creation by Gaurav Gupta, featuring a structured bodice, voluminous skirt, and sweeping train—exactly the kind of outfit the festival’s new rules prohibit.

The updated guidelines restrict nudity and ban large, extravagant dresses with trains.
Berry had earlier shared her frustration, saying she was forced to change her outfit for official events because her original gown’s train was “too big.” While she acknowledged that banning nudity may be fair, the restrictions on dress volume sparked criticism.

For the gala, which wasn’t an official red carpet event, Berry wore the gown anyway—paired with pointed heels, long earrings, and classic waves in her hair. Her look captivated attendees and marked a moment of sartorial rebellion.
As a Cannes jury member this year, Berry was also seen at the festival’s opening in a less controversial but still striking black-and-white Jacquemus dress.

Despite the rules, Berry continues to push boundaries with style. Earlier this month, she made headlines at the Met Gala in a daring LaQuan Smith dress that barely avoided a wardrobe malfunction.
As one insider put it, “Halle marches to the beat of her own drum—and she’s doing it with style.”
