The Princess of Wales Isn’t the Only Royal Avoiding This Controversial Fashion Choice…
Royal fashion comes with plenty of rules, and it’s rare to see bold or revealing styles among the British royal family. But there’s one specific item you won’t find in Princess Kate’s wardrobe anymore — and it may come as a surprise.
The Princess of Wales has stopped wearing real fur and hasn’t been seen in any since a 2018 controversy involving one of her winter hats.
A Royal Faux Fur Incident?
During her royal tour of Sweden and Norway while pregnant with Prince Louis, Kate wore a pompom beanie at a Stockholm ice-skating event. Many believed it was made from arctic fox fur, specifically a ‘Rain Fur Pompom Wool Beanie’ by Eugenia Kim.
This sparked debate among royal watchers, especially since her gloves and coat also appeared fur-lined. However, Kensington Palace confirmed that the hat and accessories were all made with faux fur, and the coat was shearling.
According to royal expert Danielle Stacey, Kate also received a Royal Family Order made with glass instead of ivory — a nod to her and Prince William’s conservation efforts.
Kate’s Not Alone in Ditching Fur
Queen Camilla also pledged to stop buying fur products, following the example of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who began choosing faux fur for her outfits in 2019.
PETA shared a palace letter that read: “Her Majesty will not procure any new fur garments,” sending warm wishes with the message.
Though both King Charles III and Queen Camilla wore traditional fur robes during the 2023 coronation, other changes reflected modern values — including the use of paper for the coronation roll instead of animal skin.
Danielle added: “The royals’ decisions align with shifting public views on animal rights. From avoiding fur to removing foie gras from royal menus, they’re embracing more ethical practices.”
