George Clooney isn’t bothered by Donald Trump’s recent insult calling him a “second-rate movie star” and a “failed political pundit.”
During an April 21 interview on CBS Mornings, the 63-year-old actor responded to the comment, which Trump posted on social media following Clooney’s 60 Minutes appearance discussing freedom of the press.
“I don’t care,” Clooney said. “I’ve known Donald Trump a long time. I’m not here to please the president. I’m here to speak the truth whenever I can.”
Clooney acknowledged that criticism comes with the territory. “People won’t always like it. Elon Musk has had things to say too — they’re entitled to their opinions, just like I’m entitled to mine.”
In the 60 Minutes segment, Clooney, who portrayed iconic journalist Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck, warned against governments using power or corporate influence to intimidate journalists. “Governments don’t like a free press,” he said, referencing lawsuits Trump has filed against media outlets.
Trump later criticized the 60 Minutes piece as a “puff piece,” referencing a past op-ed where Clooney called on Democrats to replace Joe Biden as their 2024 nominee — a suggestion that eventually materialized. Clooney described that op-ed as a matter of civic responsibility.
Reflecting on Trump’s election win, Clooney said on The Late Show he’s trying to set an example for his kids: “Shake hands, say ‘Good game,’ and be ready for the next match in a few years.”
