First Lady Melania Trump, known for her fashion choices often reflecting her mood, wore a black lace veil to Pope Francis’ funeral on April 26.
The former fashion model, the first Catholic First Lady since Jacqueline Kennedy, paired a double-breasted coat dress with a traditional veil, gloves, and black stilettos for the occasion.
President Donald Trump, accompanying Melania, wore his signature blue suit.
The first lady’s look was reminiscent of her attire during her husband’s first international trip in 2017, where she also wore a similar veil while meeting Pope Francis, calling the experience unforgettable.
Jacqueline Kennedy had also worn a black dress and lace mantilla when meeting Pope John XXIII in 1962.
In Catholic tradition, women often wear mantillas, or chapel veils, during Mass. Melania had previously shared her appreciation for meeting Pope Francis, stating it was an experience she would never forget.
The Trumps were among the many mourners at St. Peter’s Square, with Melania celebrating her 55th birthday that day.
The couple was seated in the front row, with President Trump’s midnight blue suit standing out amidst the sea of black attire. Former President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden sat a few rows behind them.
After the Mass, Pope Francis’ coffin was transported in an open-air popemobile to its burial site, as crowds cheered along the streets of Rome.
Melania’s fashion choices have often sparked controversy, but her appearance at the funeral was respectful and somber.
