Ben Affleck Shares the Only Time He Ever Saw His Father Cry — “It Broke Me”

Ben Affleck recently shared a rare and emotional story about his father during a visit to the Criterion Collection’s iconic film closet. While selecting his favorite classic films, Affleck revealed that David Lynch’s *The Elephant Man* holds a deeply personal meaning for him.

It was, he said, “the first and only time” he ever saw his father, Timothy Affleck, cry. The film, which explores themes of humanity and dignity, left a lasting impression on both father and son.

Affleck, 52, appeared visibly moved as he added the film to his collection, calling it “heartbreaking and beautiful.” His selection also included other cinematic favorites such as *Miller’s Crossing*, *The Silence of the Lambs*, *Traffic*, and two of his own films—*Dazed and Confused* and *Armageddon*.

He also highlighted Jean Renoir’s *The Rules of the Game*, quoting his favorite line: “Everyone has their reasons,” a sentiment he admitted borrowing for his own film *Gone Baby Gone*.

Affleck reflected on his father’s journey, noting that Timothy, a former janitor, has marked over 30 years of sobriety.

The actor expressed deep respect for his father’s resilience and added that adulthood involves understanding that parents aren’t perfect—they’re people trying their best.

Currently promoting *The Accountant 2*, in which he stars and produces alongside Jon Bernthal, Affleck continues to expand his career with upcoming films *Animals* and *RIP*.

Throughout it all, his appreciation for cinema remains central—both as a craft and a connection to family.
