The relationship between Prince William and Kate Middleton began during their time at St Andrews University, where their friendship gradually turned into love.
Long before they officially dated, a playful moment hinted at what was to come. According to Laura Warshauer, a university friend, Kate once pretended to be William’s girlfriend to help him escape an awkward social situation.
At a party, a girl was chatting up William. He seemed polite but uncomfortable. That’s when Kate stepped in—crossing the room, wrapping her arms around William, and giving him the perfect excuse to say, “Sorry, I have a girlfriend.” He later turned to Kate and thanked her.
That moment wasn’t the only time their bond showed early signs of chemistry. Warshauer recalled another event—a Harry Potter-themed party—where William bid £200 in a charity auction just to go on a date with Kate.
Kate and William’s connection strengthened during their time living together off-campus with friends in a flat that initially had a no-boys policy. The landlady was hesitant—until she learned that one of the potential tenants was Prince William.
As roommates, their friendship blossomed into romance. William once said that things “just blossomed from there” as they spent more time together. He even tried cooking romantic meals for Kate, though she often had to step in to save the day.
Even in the early days, it was clear Kate and William shared something special—something that would eventually lead to a royal future.
