Michelle Obama recently revealed that she’s returned to therapy as she navigates a new stage in her life.
Now 60, the former First Lady shared on Jay Shetty’s *On Purpose* podcast that, with her daughters grown and no longer needing constant care, and her time in the White House behind her, she is learning to make decisions just for herself.
She described therapy as a helpful “tune-up,” giving her space to reflect on old patterns, past guilt, and her relationship with her mother.
Obama explained that this new phase of independence has been both empowering and challenging. For the first time, she’s living without the usual responsibilities of being a mother, wife, or public figure, and is instead focusing on her personal growth.
She acknowledged how difficult it can be—especially for women—to choose themselves without feeling selfish or being judged.
She also noted that public speculation about her marriage with Barack Obama has intensified, simply because she’s prioritizing herself.
Michelle emphasized that society often struggles to accept a woman making independent choices, and that such freedom is sometimes misinterpreted as a sign of trouble rather than personal growth.
Overall, she encourages embracing therapy and self-reflection as powerful tools for navigating life’s transitions and maintaining emotional well-being.
