Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley have been happily married since 1993, forming one of Hollywood’s most enduring couples.
But before their love story began, Kelley had a low-key, three-year relationship with Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin.

Matlin, who made history as the first deaf performer to win an Oscar for her debut in Children of a Lesser God, dated Kelley from 1989 to 1992. Despite their fame, they kept their relationship mostly out of the public eye, living together in the Hollywood Hills.
Kelley even cast her in his series Picket Fences, where she had a recurring role. Though the couple eventually split, neither publicly commented on the breakup.

Years later, Matlin would name Kelley as one of her favorite directors, implying an amicable end.
In 1993, Kelley met Pfeiffer on a blind date — though it didn’t go smoothly at first. Michelle brought along several people, including her sister, and hardly spoke to him.

Still, he followed up two days later, and a phone call turned into a lasting bond. Not long after, he took her to see Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and their relationship quickly grew serious.
They married later that year. At the time, Michelle was already in the process of adopting her daughter Claudia Rose, whom David later adopted as well.

The couple also welcomed a son, John Henry, through adoption in the same year. Today, they remain a private, strong couple, raising two grown children.
