Lester Holt Surprises Fans with Big Announcement About His Future Plans…

Lester Holt, a respected figure in American journalism and a familiar face to millions, is stepping down from his role as anchor of NBC Nightly News.

After leading the network’s flagship program for a decade, Holt, 65, is shifting his full attention to Dateline, the long-running true crime series he has also hosted.

Holt made history in 2015 when he became the first African-American solo anchor of a weekday network evening newscast.

His time behind the Nightly News desk saw him report on some of the most defining events of the last decade, including the rise of Donald Trump, the global pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and escalating conflicts in the Middle East.

Despite a general dip in traditional TV viewership, nightly newscasts from NBC, ABC, and CBS still attract millions.

Holt’s leadership at NBC Nightly News earned him widespread admiration—from colleagues in the newsroom to viewers across the country.

According to NBC News programming VP Janelle Rodriguez, “Lester is the heart of this news organization.”

Holt reflected on his journey with gratitude, calling it “an amazing ride” and expressing pride in anchoring two of broadcast TV’s most iconic programs.

NBC has yet to name his replacement, but Tom Llamas is widely expected to step into the role.
