J.K. Rowling is once again under fire following her support for a recent U.K. Supreme Court ruling that defines “woman” based on biological sex under the Equality Act.
The April 16 decision means that even trans women with gender recognition certificates may not be protected as women under the law.
While the court stated this wouldn’t harm trans rights, critics fear it could lead to increased discrimination, especially in workplaces.
Rowling celebrated the ruling on X (formerly Twitter), calling it “TERF VE Day” — a reference to the end of World War II — and praised trans-exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs).
She posted a photo of herself by the beach with a drink and cigar, writing, “I love it when a plan comes together,” and used hashtags like #SupremeCourt and #WomensRights. Reports say she also donated £70,000 to the group that argued the case.
The backlash was swift. Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan called the ruling “horrifying,” vowed to match donations to a trans charity, and criticized Rowling’s stance on Instagram.
Former Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have also spoken out against her views in the past.
Rowling has stirred further outrage by dismissing International Asexuality Day and spreading a false claim that Algerian boxer Imane Khelif was transgender during the 2024 Olympics.
Despite growing criticism, Rowling remains an executive producer for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot, playing a key role in shaping the series.
