Everyone’s Talking About Meghan Markle’s Surprise Title Reveal—And Not in a Good Way

Meghan Markle is once again making headlines—this time for subtly embracing her royal past in a way that’s stirring up strong reactions.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE magazine, Meghan revealed that she and Prince Harry, along with their children Archie and Lilibet, have adopted “Sussex” as their family name, stepping away from her maiden name “Markle.”

She shared that the title, bestowed upon them by Queen Elizabeth II on their wedding day, has become deeply meaningful, especially after having children. “It’s our family name, and it means a lot to us now,” Meghan explained.

Shortly after, during an episode of her Netflix show With Love, Meghan, she gently corrected actress Mindy Kaling, saying, “I’m Sussex now,” emphasizing how special it is to share a last name with her kids.

But the calm didn’t last long. Controversy erupted when Meghan shared a photo of a letter she received from Ukrainian official Yulia Svyrydenko, who addressed her as “Your Royal Highness”—a title Meghan and Harry agreed to stop using after leaving their royal roles in 2020.

Critics quickly pounced. Some royal commentators argued that referencing the HRH title was misleading, given their exit from official duties. Others accused Meghan of wanting royal perks without royal responsibilities.

Although the HRH title hasn’t been formally revoked, the couple had agreed not to use it. Still, some insiders warn that without official removal, Meghan could technically reclaim it—raising questions about what could come next.
