After more than a decade together, Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez are parting ways.

The Criminal Minds: Evolution star has filed for divorce from his wife of 12 years, actress Kiele Sanchez. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Gilford cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split.

The couple tied the knot in 2012 and share two children—Zeppelin, 7, and Revel, 4—for whom Gilford is requesting joint custody.

The news surprised fans, especially since the pair also play an on-screen married couple in Criminal Minds: Evolution.

In past interviews, Gilford admitted it was emotionally difficult acting alongside Sanchez in such dark scenes, joking about how strange it felt.

Interestingly, the couple’s casting was somewhat accidental. Sanchez received an offer to play Gilford’s wife just as he was leaving for work one day.

Showrunner Erica Messer explained they didn’t want to put pressure on the couple, but Sanchez’s talent—and their real-life chemistry—ultimately made the casting decision a no-brainer.

Gilford and Sanchez first met in 2010 while working on The Matadors and later starred in Kingdom and The Purge: Anarchy. Sanchez even co-wrote an episode for Gilford’s role in The Fall of the House of Usher.

Despite their split, fans will likely remember their relationship for its heartfelt beginnings—Gilford once said in an email to their wedding photographer, “I want to tell you the story of how I met the love of my life.”
