Meghan Markle is getting real about a beauty mishap many can relate to.
On a recent episode of her Confessions of a Female Founder podcast, the Duchess of Sussex revealed how a DIY hair color experiment during the COVID-19 lockdown didn’t go quite as planned.
Meghan, 43, shared the story with celebrity colorist Kadi Lee, reflecting on the time she turned to box dye to maintain her signature dark hair.
Living in California during the pandemic, Meghan said she thought, “I’m going to look exactly like the woman on the box.” But things quickly took a turn. “Instead, it came out super inky — almost like Elvira’s hair,” she joked.
Realizing the result wasn’t what she hoped for, she reached out to her friend and wedding hairstylist Serge Normant, who connected her with Lee. “You came to the house, we were all masked up — it was such a strange time, but I remember it so clearly,” she said.
That visit sparked a close friendship, with Meghan even saying her kids, Archie and Lilibet, now call Lee “Auntie Kadi.”
Meghan also reflected on earlier hair struggles, recalling how, during her college years at Northwestern, she used a stove-heated flat iron since plug-in ones were hard to come by.
“Most of the girls didn’t understand what the smell was — it was just me trying to manage my texture,” she said.
As someone who’s spoken openly about being biracial, Meghan has long embraced her identity and shared her experiences navigating beauty standards and self-acceptance.
