Tensions reignite as HBO gears up for a new Harry Potter series, with J.K. Rowling making headlines once more—this time not for her books, but for her sharp remarks aimed at former stars of the franchise.
Rowling, whose outspoken views on transgender rights first sparked backlash in 2020 after her controversial tweet about “people who menstruate,” is once again at the center of controversy. The friction between her and actors from the original film series has resurfaced.
Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger, has been a vocal supporter of trans rights, tweeting that “trans people are who they say they are” and reiterating that stance during her 2022 BAFTA appearance.
Daniel Radcliffe also voiced support for the transgender community through The Trevor Project, apologizing for the hurt caused by Rowling’s words and urging fans to separate the books from the author’s views.
But Rowling has remained firm—and critical. After being tagged in a post referencing *The Cass Report* on transgender healthcare, one user suggested Watson and Radcliffe might one day apologize.
Rowling’s response was blunt:
“Not safe, I’m afraid,” she wrote, stating that those who aligned with movements she believes undermine women’s rights should direct their apologies elsewhere.
Though she didn’t name Watson or Radcliffe, the message was clear: the divide remains, and for Rowling, reconciliation is no longer an option.
While stars like Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter have supported Rowling, the core trio—Watson, Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint—have stood by their earlier statements, even as the cultural conversation around the issue grows more complex.
