Valerie Bertinelli took a walk down memory lane during her appearance on *The Drew Barrymore Show* on April 15, where she revealed a surprising bit of her dating history — a short-lived relationship with legendary director Steven Spielberg.
The Emmy-winning actress, 64, shared an old black-and-white photo featuring herself with Spielberg, 78. In the snapshot, she’s seen wearing a scarf and oversized sunglasses, smiling warmly at the director, who’s dressed in a white blazer and a patterned shirt.
“I dated him for a New York minute,” Bertinelli quipped, leaving Drew Barrymore and Ross Mathews visibly stunned. “I had a great time,” she added.
Bertinelli said the fling happened before she met rock star Eddie Van Halen, whom she married in 1981 and divorced in 2007. She recalled auditioning for *Raiders of the Lost Ark* — and Spielberg asking her out. The two dated for a few months and even attended the Academy Awards together, where she bumped into Oscar-winner Sally Field in an elevator.
The romance likely took place around early 1980, as Field won her Oscar that year and *Raiders* debuted in 1981.
Decades later, Bertinelli jokingly requested that Spielberg return a bowling shirt she left behind, laughing, “I didn’t grab it from the closet when we broke up.”
Earlier that week, she also reflected on her past with Van Halen and the comparisons she received to Yoko Ono — humorously referencing the rumor that she contributed to Van Halen’s breakup.
She also told Barrymore that her son Wolfgang has strict instructions not to allow a biopic about the band until she’s gone. If it ever happened, she suggested Selena Gomez could play her — then quickly begged, “But Selena, don’t do it. Please don’t do it.”
