Oscar-Winning Duo Behind ‘Free Solo’ Divorces in Shocking Announcement…

Oscar-winning filmmakers Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin have announced their divorce after 13 years of marriage.

The couple, known for directing the groundbreaking documentary *Free Solo*, confirmed the split in a joint statement, citing careful reflection and a shared commitment to their children as key reasons for the decision.

“After a great deal of care and consideration, we have come to the difficult decision to end our marriage,” the statement read. “Our lives have been filled with adventure — both in storytelling and in raising our two wonderful children.

As we move forward separately, our children remain at the center of our universe.”

Vasarhelyi and Chin married in 2013 and built a strong personal and professional partnership, directing several award-winning documentaries, starting with *Meru* in 2015.

Their work reached new heights with *Free Solo* in 2018, which earned them an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and multiple Emmys.

The couple also transitioned into narrative filmmaking with *Nyad* (2023), and recently released *Endurance* (2024), a National Geographic documentary chronicling a team’s search for a sunken Antarctic ship.

Despite the personal change, their production company, Little Monster Films, assured that the divorce will not affect current or upcoming projects. “They remain committed to their production teams and the creative vision they’ve built,” the company shared.

Chin and Vasarhelyi had been splitting their time between New York City and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Though their marriage is ending, their shared legacy in filmmaking — and their commitment to co-parenting — continues.
