Trump Wants to Rename Veterans Day – Here’s What He’s Proposing…

Former President Donald Trump has suggested changing the name of Veterans Day to “Victory Day for World War I” and wants the United States to formally recognize May 8 as “Victory Day for World War II.”

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “We are going to start celebrating our victories again!” emphasizing his desire to highlight America’s past military achievements.

Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11, marks the end of World War I and honors all U.S. military veterans. Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to include veterans of all wars.

Despite its roots in World War I, the holiday is generally a day to recognize the sacrifices and service of American veterans.

Trump argued that while the U.S. was victorious in both world wars, the country doesn’t properly commemorate these achievements.

He criticized current leadership for failing to celebrate American strength and military success, adding that the lack of recognition undermines national pride.

May 8, known internationally as Victory in Europe (V-E) Day, commemorates the official surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945. While the day is recognized in several European countries, it is not currently a federal holiday in the U.S.

Creating or renaming a federal holiday requires Congressional legislation.

While Trump’s proposal is unlikely to move forward without bipartisan support, it has sparked new conversation about how the U.S. remembers its military history and those who served.
