The Cannes Film Festival is no stranger to drama, but this year, a real-life moment nearly stole the spotlight from the big screen.
Denzel Washington, attending the May 19 premiere of his new film Highest 2 Lowest alongside co-star A$AP Rocky, found himself in an unexpected confrontation — and now a lip reader has exposed exactly what was said.
Amid the festival’s red-carpet glamour, Washington was approached by a photographer who reportedly tugged at his jacket.
While video of the heated moment quickly surfaced online, the actual dialogue was unclear — until expert lip reader Jeremy Freeman analyzed the footage.
According to Freeman, Denzel firmly told the photographer: “Never put your hands on me again,” pointing at him and repeating, “Stop. I’m talking to you.”
Despite the warning, the photographer allegedly laughed and mocked him. When he reached out again and asked to take a picture, Washington’s frustration escalated.
Fans were quick to react on social media, defending Denzel and slamming the photographer for disrespect. One fan wrote, “He warned him — and the guy did it anyway. Unbelievable.”
While Washington skipped the next day’s press conference, the night ended on a high note. Director Spike Lee presented him with an honorary Palme d’Or, honoring his career and impact.
Washington, emotional and humbled, thanked the crowd, saying, “We’re blessed beyond measure.” His upcoming film hits theaters August 22, with an Apple TV+ release on September 5.
Sometimes, even legends have to draw the line.
