Gerry Turner, the beloved first “Golden Bachelor,” is opening up about his ongoing fight with bone marrow cancer and how it’s reshaping his approach to life and love.
On the “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast, the 73-year-old revealed he’s feeling “great” as he monitors his incurable diagnosis — Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia — a rare form of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
“Until symptoms appear, there’s no treatment,” Turner explained. “I’m on a six-month testing schedule, and the fact that my doctor plans to shorten that to three months when I turn 75 is actually a good sign — it means he expects me to be around.”
Despite the weight of the diagnosis, Turner says it’s given him a new perspective: “It’s a privilege to live like you’re dying. I say yes to everything now. I’m more open to emotions, to adventure — life just feels more exciting.”
Turner, who recently divorced his on-screen fiancée Theresa Nist, said his health struggles played a role in their split. “I wanted to focus on my family — my daughters and grandkids — and that became the priority,” he told *People*.
Though their relationship ended, both Turner and Nist have expressed mutual respect and well wishes, with Nist saying, “I want him to be happy and healthy — I truly wish him the best.”
