Donald Trump, 78, drew attention at Pope Francis’ funeral in the Vatican by wearing a blue suit, blue tie, and white shirt — a noticeable departure from traditional funeral attire.
At solemn Catholic ceremonies, dark, usually black clothing is expected. Trump’s bright suit quickly caught the eye of social media users. One wrote, “Trump stands out from the crowd, while Melania is dressed traditionally.” Another asked, “Why is he not wearing black to a formal funeral?”
Melania Trump, 54, followed tradition closely, wearing a black dress, long coat, black mantilla, and matching heels. Her respectful outfit drew praise online, with users complimenting her elegance and style.
Funeral protocol usually demands dark attire at major events like a Pope’s funeral. While Trump’s blue suit didn’t officially violate diplomatic rules, it broke with expected custom and sparked debate.
The funeral gathered around 50 heads of state and royals, including Prince William and King Felipe VI. Seating was arranged alphabetically by country names in French, placing the U.S. delegation prominently, although Trump sat far from Ukrainian President Zelensky, who received strong applause.
Former President Joe Biden attended separately, highlighting both his Catholic faith and his political distance from Trump.
Trump’s attendance also gained attention because of his previously strained relationship with Pope Francis, particularly over immigration policies.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, had a colorful past — working as a nightclub bouncer and enjoying tango dancing before rising to lead the Catholic Church.
