Former *Modern Family* star Ariel Winter has opened up about her decision to leave Los Angeles, describing it as an emotional step tied to years of online harassment and childhood trauma.
In a recent *People* cover story, the 27-year-old actress explained that constant public scrutiny, especially cruel headlines and body shaming from a young age, took a toll on her mental health.

“I was just 14, and people were writing terrible things about me,” she shared, adding that it severely damaged her self-esteem.
Winter revealed she became a target for online bullying, making it difficult for her to feel confident or even recognize herself. The actress, who began portraying Alex Dunphy at age 11, also spoke about her troubled childhood.
At 14, she was removed from her mother’s care due to abuse allegations and was placed under the guardianship of her sister, Shanelle Gray, who she credits for helping her rebuild her life.

Though she left LA in 2020 with her boyfriend, Luke Benward, Winter clarified that she hasn’t left the entertainment industry.
She’s now exploring producing, podcasting, and even launching a cooking show. She said the move was a chance to start fresh, as LA carried many painful memories.

Winter is also advocating for child safety through her work with SOSA. “I don’t want to be known as just a survivor,” she said. “I want people to see me as someone who uses her platform to help others.”
